First major stage race win for SRAM RED

Amersfoort, February 26th 2008. In what was the truest test of the SRAM RED componentry to date, Levi Leipheimer (Astana) convincingly won the 2008 Tour of California with a lead of 49s over his closest rival. The 1045 Km race, which followed California’s Pacific coast from Palo Alto southward to Pasadena, has proven some of the most important in the convincingly successful history of SRAM’s road componentry.
The grueling eight-day stage race featured some of the World’s best teams, including four SRAM Red-equipped teams, in Astana, Saunier Duval-Scott, Bissell, and Kelly Benefi ts-Medifast. The weather was rarely agreeable with colder temperatures and persistent rain that followed the race and tested every part of the eight-piece SRAM RED groupset. Leipheimer had zero mechanical issues during his brilliant Tour of California. His aggressive performance on the mountainous stage three into San Jose, and a dominating time trial performance in stage fi ve, proved the winning difference. Teammates, including Chris Horner and Sergei Ivanov, shared the burden of staying on the front and controlling the race once Leipheimer took the yellow leader’s jersey after stage three. To add to the SRAM RED festivities at the 2008 tour of California, Luciano Pagliarini (Saunier Duval-Scott) won the 6th stage between Santa Barbara and Santa Clarita, registering the fi rst victory of the year for Saunier Duval-Scott.
